Julie Knapp - Kenilworth

Dear Julie

You may recall that you helped Maureen and I over our wonderful trip to the States and Canada last month. I'd like to thank you and your colleagues for all you did to make the trip flow seamlessly from one destination to another, just what one wants from a travel agent.

Keflada – Akrogiali Villa – Ionian & Aegean Holidays. October 7th -13th

We arranged our holiday through your office and I just wanted to say thanks as we had the perfect time. All the travel arrangements were efficient and on time and the villa was clean and exactly as described in the brochure.

Your agent promised us that our villa would not be overlooked, which was important to us, and it turned out to be the case. The other 3 villas in the group were overlooked.

Once again, thanks. We are already thinking about next year.

Attention of Paul Carter - thank you for your letter enquiring about my Mexico trip.  I was extremely pleased and impressed with all the arrangements you made on my behalf.  Everything worked well and I had a superb room at El Dorado.  I was especially impressed by the H & K representative who met me at the airport on arrival - Katja - who managed to find me in the crowd and escort me to my car.  She gave me details of my pick up for the return to Cancun from my hotel and then also left a note in my room 2 days before to remind me of this.  All in all it was a very enjoyable week with no worries on my part.
Sincere thanks for all your hard work to ensure it all went smoothly.

I just thought I would drop you a line to let you know that Anne & I had a terrific trip.  The arrangements were impeccable and we were able to pack as much as possible into the time we were there. This was due in no small measure to the Travelsphere Rep., Steve Rodaway who was the consummate professional and nothing was too much trouble , he really did go the extra mile to make sure everyone got all they wanted from the trip.  I would be grateful if you would pass these comments to Travelsphere.

My thanks also to you for making the arrangements for what has been a memorable trip.

South Africa January 2012

Carrick Travel recently arranged a trip to South Africa involving a stay in Capetown, a tour of the Garden route and a stay in the Kruger National Park.

Christine Edgeller was so helpful beforehand – tailoring the holiday to our needs. The holiday was superb and, as we always expect of Carrick, all the arrangements were perfect – flights, transfers, hotels and guides.
The only problem we had – we had to transfer game lodges in the Kruger because of flooding – was sorted out before we knew there was a problem.

This was the 5th long haul holiday that the Carrick Leamington office has arranged for us and we haven’t been able to fault any of them. Everything has been perfect.

Hi all,
This is just a quick update on my trip to Greece because half of you have probably already been there but it also serves as a log for me to remember the trip
I travelled with a company called Cosmos because they not only did a pretty diverse trip around Greece but also linked up with a cruise company to do a 5 day trip on the ‘Louis Crystal' that took me around the Greek islands so I got a good overview of Greece. I chose to travel the last two weeks of October because the weather would be cooling down and yet the sea would still be warm.
It was a good choice because the days were hot and sunny and the sea probably at its warmest. Another advantage of going later in the season was that the coach was only half full so there was plenty of room to spread out and on our excursions we could all get a look in. On our 1st full day we had the option to take and island tour for the day, it turned out to be a 10 hour trip taking in the islands of, Hydra, Poros and Aegina. This was a good choice, not only was the weather super but you get the chance to meet other passengers face to face as you relax on deck and there was a group of Australians who were great company and a pleasure to know.
Our travels started with an early morning trip to the Acropolis before all the coaches from the cruise ships arrived and ironically as we were leaving, a party following a ‘Discovery’ lollipop arrived and Discovery coach No2 was parked next to our coach in the car park but I didn’t spot anyone I knew (I know a lot of crew from this ship). Most days were an early start but this was a big advantage, to get to these sites before the other tourist arrive is worth the effort, not only do you get better photo opportunities but it is also cooler, I would hate to make this trip in the height of the season, it was hot enough when we were there and mainland Greece is a very hilly place with a lot of steps to climb.
Our coach trip took us to the, Corinth Canal, Epidaurus (major amphitheatre), Mycenae, Sparta, Mystra, Olympia, Delphi, and Meteora. It was good to stand on the same spot where this years Olympic flame was lit, the same flame that past my house earlier in the year. Travelling between these sites you realise just how mountainous Greece is and I was amazed at how loaded the olive trees were. Mainland Greece is well worth seeing, there is so much history there and the scenery can be quite impressive but not for me in the heat of the high season.
The 5 day cruise was an experience, the passengers were multicultural which made announcements longwinded, the selfishness and disregard for others, from some passengers spoilt the otherwise excellent shows. The dining experience was open sitting and you never knew who you would be next too but the food was acceptable and the service fortunately swift. The itinerary however suited me although our allotted time at each port was limited. We first visited Mykonos said to be a swinging island but we had to leave at 9pm before the party started. Day two took us to Turkey and the ruins of Ancient Ephesus, these ruins of white marble were spectacular, it must of been amazing in its day. The following afternoon we got to visit the beautiful island of Patmos.
Day 3 we had the whole day at Rhodes and I took a trip to Lindos where we were soaked by a thunder storm, the afternoon was spent swimming and visiting the walled city of Rhodes. Our final day took us to Crete and Knossos in the morning and although Crete is said to be a beautiful island, I found Knossos and the queuing back at the port disappointing. Our final stop, late afternoon was to be Santorini we were all hoping the weather would improve for this iconic destination, we were not disappointed. Santorini is much bigger than I expected, it must of been one hell of a bang when that went off, but it is a stunning place that more than matched my expectations. We stayed ashore until dark, which is quite unusual for a cruise ship visit, so we had the added bonus of watching the sunset. It was a perfect end to a most enjoyable trip.
All for now, next trip will be the Amazon in March 2013, - Rich.

Helen at Cheylesmore

Hello Helen

Just wanted to let you know that we had a wonderful time in Russia - it far exceeded our expectations so thank you for your help and recommendation.

I'm not sure if you want feedback but it may be useful for any future customers. Our first surprise, when being met at Moscow airport, was to find that our group consisted of a total of four people! At first we thought this might be a bit awkward but in fact it turned out to be ideal as we really did feel as though we were being treated to a personal tour. Apparently the most they ever usually have is about ten or twelve people. We have since heard from an acquaintance, who went with Regent Travel and they had over 30 in their group and were transported everywhere by a coach - nightmare!

Both Damara (Tamara), our guide in Moscow, and Tatiana, in St Petersburg, were brilliant. They both spoke excellent English and were so knowledgeable about Russian history and art. We were never rushed and they had obviously put a lot of thought into all the tours, so that we were never overwhelmed by names and dates but really came away with stories that stayed with you. Our drivers were always prompt and courteous and Tatiana kindly arranged last minute tickets and transport for us to see 'Swan Lake' at the Hermitage - certainly one of the highlights!

The Hotel Budapest was modest, perhaps in need of some refurbishment but we did have use of the facilities of the Peter I next door. Staff were courteous and food was very good and plentiful. The location was excellent and we could easily walk up to Red Square to see the sights and there were a vast array of designer shops and malls nearby (for window shopping only!!)

Red Square was amazing, particularly when all lit up at night, and we were both surprised by how safe and relaxed we felt walking about - something I had perhaps been a little apprehensive about. The Kremlin and Armoury tour was another highlight, along with Damara's wonderful introduction to the history of Russian art at the Tretyakov Gallery.

The last day in Moscow was perhaps the only day that was lacking. After checking-out from the hotel, we had a visit to the Metro system and we were then taken to the Old Arbart, which we didn't find particularly interesting - unless you wanted more souvenir shopping. So we were then left with a very long afternoon and evening before being collected from the hotel lobby at 10.30pm for our overnight trip on the excellent sleeper train.

The Ambassador, in St Petersburg, was a much better hotel with good facilities and excellent public areas. The buffet breakfasts were really good - the only thing we found a little strange was the lack of choice for our evening meal. It seemed that the 'Intourist group', which had now grown to six, were treated totally differently from other diners, with no choice of menu (although they did find an alternative if, say, you didn't eat fish or whatever). On the last evening the restaurant was being used for a function and we were shown to a table at the back of a side room and offered a choice of spaghetti or spaghetti. Other diners, meanwhile helped themselves to the extensive buffet, which we thought was a bit odd. Still, only a minor blip.

All our tours in St P were excellent. Again, we were given plenty of time and Tatiana was charming and so interesting to talk to, with a real passion for her country. She introduced us to the wonderful pie shops - which became a firm favourite for a lunchtime snack - and took us round beautiful churches and cathedrals and of course the magnificent Catherine's Palace. What a stunning building, made even more impressive by a chill day, with sunshine, blue skies and golden leaves.

The weather, in fact was good throughout. Perhaps one or two grey days with a little rain but a wonderful time to visit. A lack of tourists meant we encountered no queues and had plenty of time and space to wander and take in all the sights.

All in all, a wonderful tour - please do pass on our thanks to Intourist and their wonderful guides.

Add it to your list of places to visit, Helen. You won't be disappointed!

With kind regards

Uzbekistan- October 2012. Liz Pierrepont

Uzbekistan- October 2012.

We have just returned from a 10 night adventure to this fascinating country organised by Page and Moy (Travelsphere) and we'd just like to thank Carrick Travel for their brilliant recommendation for the more adventurous traveller who would like a totally different experience.

The organisation was brilliant and we can't praise our 2 guides enough. Tami was our UK guide and was efficient, informative and above all extremely caring and attentive. Annait our Uzbek guide was a fount of knowledge and enlightening anecdotes. They bith certainly enhanced our holiday experience.

The country itself is fascinating not least because of its turbulent history. We visited Khiva, Bukhara, Samarkand and Tashkent and saw spectacular architecture and amazing desert scenery. We were regaled with tales of Alexander the Great, Genghis Khan, Tamerlaine, Marco Polo and more recently the Uzbek's experience in the Russian and Soviet Empire!

All in all a fabulous experience for history lovers and those who want a holiday with a difference.

The hotel standard and food were also better than anticipated and we can definitely recommend the national dish, Plov!

Finally, a mention of the warm, dignified and very welcoming Uzbek people- wonderful!

Many thanks again to Carrick Travel for a fantastic trip.

Madeira Holiday Leamington

Hello Chris

Thanks for your letter. We had a great holiday in Madeira. What a tropical paradise! We loved the weather, plants, gardens, food and culture. Everyone was so friendly. The Meteor meet and greet car parking at Birmingham Airport was so much easier than the Long Stay car parks. We had good flights with Thomson-interesting airport at Funchal! Transfers were good. the Quinta Bela Sao Tiago was excellant-a nice mix of the old and new and not too large. There were only a few Brits at the hotel, most of the guests were from Germany. We had a lovely room with a great view over Funchal (including a Fireworks display on Saturday). The staff at the hotel were very friendly and nothing was too much trouble for them. We were able to walk to lots of restaurants and enjoyed a friendly banter with the waiters as they invite you to dine at their place, Portugal winning their Euro 2012 games when we were there was a good talking point and Funchal was partying when they got through to the Quarter Finals.

Felicity had a nice Reflexology session at the hotel and we were getting used to afternoon tea with cake or cold drinks by the pool! We were able to do what we wanted to do,ie sight seeing in the mornings, relaxing by the pool in the afternoon and having a meal out and a stroll in the evening. We went on the cable Car to Monte (first time in a cable car). we did a Blandy's eastern tour of the Island, taking in Pico do Arieiro,Santana and Machico.

We went to a service at the English church and received a very friendly welcome from them. After the service it was time for a coffee or a glass of Madeira wine in the garden. It was a lovely setting.

We would certainly recommend Madeira and the Quinta Bela Sao Tiago and hope to go again. We will send off the questionnaire to Classic Collections and will put something on trip Advisor. Let us know if you want anything for your website.

Thanks for such a wonderful holiday.

Best wishes

Chris at Leamington

Everything about Newfoundland and Labrador is different and it seems like a separate country – not part of Canada. It feels vast, but we covered the distances with ease, thanks to our excellent Ambassatour driver through 1st Class Holidays. We travelled through, and stayed in, the small communities dotted along the coast (livings are, in the main, made from the sea) only linked by road in the 1950’s. The people are so friendly and we were fascinated by their unique accent and turn of phrase! The weather was, as expected cold, wet, windy and… hot, all in the 12days, but there is no such thing as bad weather, just bad clothes and the layers, fleeces and windproofs did their job.

We saw icebergs making their way down iceberg alley, moose disappearing into the trees, whales following our boat, bald eagles nesting, puffin in abundance, tiny alpine flowers on the limestone barrens, stunted trees bent by the wind, snow on the mountains, spectacular sunsets, lighthouses on bleak, but beautiful headlands, huge lakes, rushing rivers, painted timber houses…..all while learning so much about the country and its settlers.

It was a fabulous adventure, not just a holiday and our thanks go to Chris, for sorting it all out. We will be back!

Helen - Coventry

Dear Helen,

Just had our 4 day break in Cala D'or and wanted to send you a note to say thank you for all your help and recommendations, we had a really good time.

The Hotel Club Marthas was fantastic, the local resort and amenities were also great (all be it a little quite) and Cala D'or was quaint.

We did hire a car and ventured out to Magaluf (a real eye opener or we are all just getting too old now) also saw a bit of the island..

Thanks for all your assistance.

Kind Regards,

Nayan and the lads.

Spain and France – May / June 2012

Well here we are – ready to go – arrived in Bilbao and making our way towards San Sabastian right up near the border of Northern Spain and France. Weather fantastic and can’t wait to get going! Stayed at the Mercure Monto Igueldo – fantastic views of San Sabastian and a little funicular going down to the town.

Day 2/3 through Pamplona and then travelling through the Pyrenees – spectacular scenery, very bendy roads and some lovely villages to stop for coffee and lunches. We stayed at Jaca at the Real hotel, good value and lovely little town and then on to the Paradores La Seu D’Urgell – very nice shame we only arrived at 7pm and left at 8 the following morning!

More fantastic scenery on our way down towards Barcleona. Decided to stay just outside at the small resort of Mataro at a new hotel on the Marina the Atenea Port – got the train into Barcelona for the day and a couple of days on the beach – resting my behind!

On the way back home now up through France – weather getting slightly cooler. Stopped at Gruissan at the Best Western Du Casino Le Phoebus – very basic but only a short walk away from a little port with lots of nice restaurants so served a purpose! Rode over the Millau Viaduct – the highest bridge in the World apparently.

Then on to Vichy, very civilised although the receptionist at the hotel Midland was having none of my school days French! Rambouillet was our next stop and finally on to Le Touquet – got a good rate at the Mercure Grand Hotel for the last night of our holiday boo hoo!

Something I had never done before and I actually am looking forward to the next trip – think we would do the long ferry crossing both ways next time and just stay in Spain – there is still so much more to explore!

For anyone interested some of the best biking roads were:-

N 260 Pyrenees to North East Coast of Spain – two especially good bits coast road Colera to San Cyprien and Jaca to La Seu d’Urgell and on to Ripoll

Mataro to Palamos

Coast road just before San Sabastian

D 940 Northern France – Le Touquet to Calais

Sue-Nice, France

To: Carrick Travel- for the attention of Dawn and Sue. My wife and which to thank you for the assistance you gave in organizing the holiday break to Nice. It all went very well and we enjoyed our stay. The hotel accommodation and service was fine, and we had two enjoyable evening meals in the small restaurant next door which has a very French atmosphere. Nice has such a variety of different experiences with the old town and the newer area which we enjoyed very much, but we are about two inches shorter now with all the walking we did. The weather was fine, plenty of sun shine with just a cool breeze of the sea at times. We took the local bus to Monaco one day at 1 Euro ( as I think you mentioned Sue ). The beach is very stoney but it did not seem to bother the sunbathers very much. All in all a very enjoyable experience. We will be sure to recommend Carrick Travels excellent service to all we speak to and especially you ladies for all your help. Best regards Tom and Carole Constant

Cape Verde

Dear Sue and Dawn, Another fantastic holiday! The Rui group does not disappoint. The Rui Tourag is the same formula we have experienced elsewhere and it works well. Good food, plenty of sunbeds, plenty of fresh towels. Entertainment every night, sometimes a bit cheesey, but it passes a good hour before bedtime, well our bedtime anyway. Rooms same as elsewhere, comfortable and cleaned well. There are specialty restaurants too which need to be booked. As at other Rui hotels, the sittings are 7pm or 9pm. For us, one is too early and the other too late! But we did try the Asian restaurant and were a little disappointed. Quite frankly, the food in the buffet restaurant - choice, quality, etc - is such that we didn't feel the need to use the specialty restaurants again anyway. This hotel is miles from anywhere. Literally. It is on 16km of the most beautiful beach, with nothing else there at all. Yet. Go soon before it gets developed. The sea is very rough and dangerous. There was never a green flag whilst we were there. But the pools are lovely and two of them are salt water, so no problem for swimming. The Rui Group actually built the 26km road from the airport to the hotel, because there was nothing there before. Transfers were efficient and quick. So if anyone wants a total chill out relaxing self-indulgent time, this is the place to go. And not too far to fly: under 6 hours going out and 5 1/2 coming back. We were not in the adult only section and most people we spoke to did not think it was really worth the extra money. Their pool was quite small and we were told a bit of scramble for beds and lots of smokers! There was plenty of room around the other pools. The weather/climate is perfect for us. 24/25 C every day (shade temp) with a breeze or sometimes quite a strong wind, but no humidity. They have rain they reckon on two days of the year in August! As a result, away from the beach the landscape is rather like one imagines the moon - I would describe it as a rock desert. The evenings though are cool and most women needed a wrap or cardigan. I think that about sums it up. Another hit for us!!!! Sally & Dave Rogers PS We were recommended to join the Rui Club. We have never heard of this before, but if you sign up there are bonuses to be had. For example, the couple who told us about it, got an upgraded seafront room on presentation of their card....

India Trip

Hi Helen, Got back from the India trip yesterday. It was possibly the best holiday ever. Indus were great, the driver was lovely and the guides were perfect, all very knowledgeable, enthusiastic and obviously proud of their country. The holiday was a perfect mix of sight seeing and leisure time. We got upgrades to suites in Oberoi Delhi, Agra and Gurgaon. The suite in Gurgouan was huge, needed roller skates to get from one end of it to the other ! Best bit has to be Ranthambore, saw tigers on 2 of the drives, simply awesome. We're definitley going to do another India tour....more than likely further north. Thanks for your help in arranging it. Best regards Jane and Steve

Vilamoura Golf Trip Fiona ,everything was just fabulous thank you and the whole trip ran like clockwork. We have had numerous thank you messages since arriving back and they all speak of how well everything was organised, so a great big thank you to you from me! As for the weather, well we had the first three days pretty good, in varying ways but we did play the front nine holes of the final day’s golf in rain and it was raining quite a lot the morning of departure. Nothing dampened the spirits though………. Once again, thank you for making my life so easy and thinking of everything for me and I have a sneaky suspicion that you will be hearing from me for 2013. Chris - Leamington

We booked our trip with the Carrick Leamington Office, with Chris Edgeller providing us with excellent service throughout, and very knowledgeable and friendly help from both Sarah Capp and David Johns in their Australasia Department, together with excellent support whilst we were in New Zealand from Darlene Phillips from Travel Time, based in NZ.
We started in Hong Kong which was a fascinating experience and then travelled on to New Zealand, which had been a long-dreamed of destination. We ended by travelling back via Raratonga, in the Cook Islands and LA, giving us a true round the world journey. The whole trip was carefully planned to give us the best experience possible, with excellent accommodation throughout, which was well positioned and varied, with hotels, villas, wonderful B&B’s, boutique hotels, motels and farm stays. The final itinerary we were provided with was well researched and informed. This also highlighted the value of pre-booking both accommodation and tours, as on our travels we met those who had not been so well planned, and so were disappointed and did not do or see all they had hoped for. We were away for seven weeks, five weeks in NZ. We much appreciated the on-going support from Darlene and Chris during our trip, with any snags being resolved quickly. It was apparent to us that we were given excellent rooms throughout, with t he advantage of having booked early giving us our first choices of accommodation and places on all tours we wanted to do. Highlights for us were the trip to Doubtful Sound on the overnight cruise, Atholwood B&B in Nelson and seeing whales in Kaikoura and albatross in Otago, and of course, the wine tasting in both Blenheim and Hawkes Bay.
Having this tour so well organised was due to Carrick’s experience and ability to know their customer’s requirements and needs, and their skills in accessing local knowledge to provide best use of the time available and the opportunity to see and do all that these fantastic destinations have to offer.

Knight - Stratford

Thank you for making our dream holiday come true. This, more than any other holiday, was very special for us as while we were away we celebrated our Ruby Wedding Anniversary. We were hoping all would go well, we were not dissapointed.

The highlight of our stay in Venice was not only the central location of the Hotel Colombina but the beautiful room 104 overlooking a unique canal. From start to finish we felt part of the venetian experience as gondolas continuously drifted by throughout the day and early evening.

We particulary enjoyed your complimentary bottle of bubbly, a very kind thought, as we stood on our small balcony almost at gonfola level making a host of new friends.

The hotel itself was small and friendly and nothing was too much trouble, it made for an unforgettable romantic five day break, we can't thank you enough.

Yours sincerely

India - Cheylesmore

Donna,

Thanks for your letter which we received on our return. Our holiday was absolutely fantastic and everything went according to plan. I have filled in a feedback form from Indus which expresses our delight and satisfaction with the holiday overall but also raises one or two issues, which in no way detracted from our enjoyment of the trip, but which we could have been made aware of in their information pack. Namely, the visits to the government shopping outlets which were included in the tours each day. We came under very heavy pressure to buy goods from these shops and it was rather awkward on one or two occasions and took up time which could have been spent at the sites. Had we been made aware by Indus of the possible inclusion of these emporia in the tours we could have avoided them. Secondly, we were rather disappointed in Emirates compared to other airlines we have flown with. The food, particularly on our return journey was not very good, the choice of films was rather limited and the stewards were not the most charming we've experienced. These are only minor complaints and in no way spoiled what was otherwise a memorable and thought provoking experience.

Thank you for your assistance in organizing it.
